The path towards sustainable nautical tourism in the Adriatic

Nautical marinas situated along the Adriatic are the main tourism hubs for inward and outward mobility flows, but they also have a wide range of negative effects on the environment, such as CO2 emissions, noise pollution, and traffic congestion. Project DEEP-SEA (Development of Energy Efficiency Planning and Services for the Mobility of Adriatic MARINAs), developed through Italy – Croatia 2014 – 2020 CBC Programme, aims to improve the existing marine mobility services by transforming them into environmentally friendly, sustainable and energy-efficient carbon neutral systems.

The Project has been granted a total value of 2,511,567.50 euros, while its implementation has started in January 2019 and finish on the 30th of June 2022.  Apart from the lead applicant which is Aries - Special Agency of the Venezia Giulia Chamber of Commerce, the Project partners from Croatia include Public Institution RERA SD For coordination and development of Split Dalmatia County; H.L. Dvorac Ltd; University of Split - Faculty of Civil engineering, Architecture and Geodesy; University of Rijeka – Faculty of Maritime Studies; County Port authority of Krk; Municipality of Malinska-Dubašnica, while the project partners from Italy consisting of the University of Trieste; Chamber of Commerce of Foggia, Municipality of Andria, and the Apulia region. The Project will support marina operators and public authorities in planning and implementing sustainable mobility, which includes expanding the offer of energy-efficient mobility services and encouraging marinas to reply to the increasing demand of ECS’ for e-boats.

The Project partners selected four pilot sites for the tailor-made investment plans to test the start-up of new services and installations which include the following locations: Julian Venetia, Andria Area (Barletta-Andria-Trani), Municipality of Malinska on the Island of Krk, and Maslinica on the island of Šolta. The University of Split - Faculty of Civil engineering, Architecture and Geodesy is responsible for the coordination of pilot action implementation, that is, of small technological investments, equipment installations and starting up of new services. PU RERA SD will from a regional aspect contribute to creating nautical marina framework analysis’ and investment plans, guidelines for energy-efficient mobility in the Adriatic marinas, as well as pilot action implementation. H.L. Dvorac Ltd is responsible for the implementation of Maslinica marina pilot action, contribution to the analysis of existing mobility services in the marinas and their energy consumption, as well as to creating Investment plans for energy-efficient mobility.

The Maslinica pilot action implementation includes installing an e-charging station for e-cars and e-boats, purchasing both e-bicycles and regular bicycles as well as a bicycle stand, a charging system and rental software, one electric car for tourists transportation, and installing a micro-grid system. The Project results include improved sustainable mobility services in nautical marinas across the Adriatic; increased competencies of decision-makers and operators involved in marina mobility management regarding further development of environmentally sustainable mobility services, and integrated management, cooperation and networking between mobility operators, Universities, and public authorities on both sides of the Adriatic.
